Hype surrounding 'Artificial Life' |

Today the radio and newspapers led with a story about an apparent genetic engineering breakthrough. The Daily Mail headline was typical: in 2 inch block letters we were told ‘ARTIFICIAL LIFE CREATED IN LAB’. Inside the newspaper, on the BBC news and elsewhere we hear well worn clichés about ‘scientists playing God’, ‘unlocking the secret of life’...’ crossing thresholds into a Brave New World’ etc, and of course dire warnings about unleashing Frankenstein monsters. But what is the reality behind the hype?
